The simulations that we have done so far have been done with a highly
susceptible cultivar. We can use the simulator to determine whether a less
susceptible cultivar offers any advantages in the selection of resistance
and the effectiveness of disease control with benomyl.
Reinitialize the model with the Venturia parameters as before, then in the
Plant menu, select Susceptibility.... Enter "80.0" in the
lower left corner of the dialog box, and click "Auto Apply" followed by
"Save Settings." This sets the level of susceptibility to 80% of the
default value throughout the season.
Select benomyl as the fungicide to be applied, using the default spray
schedule, and run the simulation for 3-4 seasons. Compare the results with
those of Exercise 2.
What effect does reduced host susceptibility have on the selection
of fungicide resistance?
